The
Singapore HR Awards 2007:
HR Stars Shine at Industry Oscars
/fontfamily>It was a glittering night at the
Mandarin Ballroom of Meritus Mandarin on 6 July 2007, as the HR world came out
to play for the industry Oscars – The Singapore HR Awards 2007.
Organised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI), The Singapore HR
Awards is the landmark awards programme that recognises excellence across the
entire spectrum of HR, with organisations throughout Singapore competing in 24
categories, including new awards recognising excellence in corporate social
responsibility and age-friendly employment practices.
This year, 26 organisations from both the public and private sectors received
the industry’s highest honours for their creativity and holistic approach in
managing programmes relating to the development and management of their human
capital. Winners included organisations such as the Ministry of Manpower,
McDonald’s Restaurants, LEGO Company and Singapore Press Holdings, chosen from a
field of top-notch entries that undergone a rigorous, 4-month assessment by a
panel of 23 judges.
Some 500 industry captains, HR chiefs and practitioners attended the gala awards
ceremony, whose keynote speech was delivered by guest-of-honour, Mr Lee Yi Shyan,
Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry. Radio and TV personality Mark
Van Cuylenburg – aka Flying Dutchman – hosted the evening’s proceedings.
Fast-food giant McDonald’s was a big winner at The Singapore HR Awards 2007,
adding the Corporate HR Award and 10 Leading HR Practices Awards to the four
Leading HR Practices Awards it won last year. The Managing Director of
McDonald’s Kenneth Chan was also among the four winners of the Leading CEO
Award.
In their citation for McDonald’s, the judges hailed its efforts in creating
success for the organisation through innovative HR and people management
practices: “McDonald’s has provided a unique cultural and business model to
immerse their vendors and their employees to their business. They develop and
align critical competencies for their vendors and their employees, which allow
them to deliver business 24/7, not only in Singapore, but globally.”
“We are honoured to be recognised yet again for our HR excellence, this time
through the HR Corporate Award. Indeed, this award is a celebration of our
people’s passion and pride,” said Mr Chan. “We believe in building people pride
and in putting our people first. Our people philosophy has always been
consistent: we believe the company can grow only if we provide opportunities for
our employees to grow, contribute and feel pride in working for McDonald’s.”
