Two memorable
experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my
Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing
address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple
question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon
earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to
conscientiously think ahead always.
The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR
leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide
us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”,
which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be
strategic partners to the business.
If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant
and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the
near future”.

National Manpower Strategic Priorities - Issues and Challenges
for HR Practitioners/Businesses
Singapore is
a country that relies heavily on its human capital. Concerted effort
must be made to address the key manpower challenges facing
the nation as a whole. Based on the background study and
discussions at various levels, the following key national manpower areas
have been identified: job
re-design, managing and implementing flexible work
arrangements, training and upgrading of staff, restructuring
wages and benefits to sustain competitiveness, fair
employment practices, re-employment of older workers aged 62
and above, managing an ageing workforce, attracting
economically inactive women to rejoin the workforce, talent
management.
The survey
is intended to determine:
The
priorities of the focus areas mentioned above;
The
readiness of the HR/business community in addressing
these manpower strategic priorities;
The
possible areas of intervention and solutions to enable
HR practitioners/business leaders to adequately meet
these strategic manpower challenges; and
The
needs of the HR/business community in preparing itself
to support nation-wide initiatives related to the above.
