Two memorable
experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my
Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing
address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple
question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon
earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to
conscientiously think ahead always.
The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR
leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide
us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”,
which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be
strategic partners to the business.
If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant
and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the
near future”.

National Wage Council Guidelines 2010/2011
18 June 2010 | 2.00 pm - 4.30 pm | SHRI @ The Verge Training Room 9
Singapore’s
GDP expanded strongly by 15.5% on a year-on-year basis in the first
quarter of 2010. Given this, and the overall improved outlook for
external economies for the rest of 2010, the
Singapore Government is projecting a GDP growth of 7% to 9% this year.
A tightening labour
market is expected, given the growth in total employment rate by
34,000* and falling unemployment
rates in the first quarter of 2010.
The NWC has
noted that the tightening labour market will place upward pressure on
wages given that many employees have accepted wage freezes and cuts
during the economic downturn.
The NWC has also
noted that
labour productivity has contracted in the last three years, which
resulted in wages outpacing productivity growth. There is thus a
pressing need to raise productivity to ensure that wage gains are
sustainable.
To ensure the
sustainability of the growth and recovery of Singapore’s economy as well
as labour productivity, the NWC has issued some guidelines to help
companies achieve sustainable growth and competitiveness in the strong
economic recovery.
Key guidelines
include:
-
Granting
sustainable wage increases, taking into account company performance
and prospects, paying greater attention to low wage workers
-
Enhancing
flexibility in wage structures
-
Reducing reliance
on low skilled foreign manpower, engaging unions/employees in
ensuring sustainable productivity growth and formulation of Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
-
Helping vulnerable
segments of the workforce to enhance employability while working
with unions/employees in implementation of re-employment policies
and systems
