Two memorable
experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my
Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing
address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple
question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon
earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to
conscientiously think ahead always.
The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR
leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide
us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”,
which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be
strategic partners to the business.
If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant
and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the
near future”.

The
Ministry of Trade and Industry is projecting Singapore's GDP to contract
by 6% to 9% in 2009. The economic downturn is expected to be prolonged
and companies are likely to be faced with the challenges of excess
manpower issues.
To help
encourage companies to implement alternative ways to manage their excess
manpower, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) together with its tripartite
partners, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and the
National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) have updated the Tripartite
Guidelines on Managing Excess Manpower.
The revised
guidelines have incorporated feedback from consultations with industries
and workers over the last few months. This was to ensure that the
guidelines remain flexible and responsive in helping companies cut costs
and save jobs.
Key
revisions include:
-
Updates to recently
announced schemes such as Jobs Credits, SPUR and SPUR-related
schemes such as Professional Skills Programme (PSP)
-
Refinements to
recommendations on shorter work week, and flexible work arrangements
-
Recommendation for
companies to convert part of the existing basic salary into Monthly
Variable Components (MVC), when they affect wage cuts
-
Guidelines on other
cost-cutting measures such as no pay leave.
