Two memorable experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to conscientiously think ahead always.

The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”, which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be strategic partners to the business.

If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the near future”.

Developing Effective Job Descriptions

A well defined Job Description is well worth the time it takes to craft one up.  If properly written, it will give clarity to why the job exists, what is the purpose of the position and what is expected from the job holder.  One of the common reasons for employee turnover is dissatisfaction due to unclear job functions or demarcation.  Job Descriptions that are well written will help highlight job disparities, duplication of accountabilities and pay imbalance if any.

A Job Description is a necessary and key tool in pricing jobs.  It is used to evaluate the job to determine the monetary worth of each job.  It is also a good aid in the recruitment process as it will give potential employees a good overview of the job content and expectation.  It allows candidates to think about their own abilities or skill sets and assess whether these fit with the job they have applied for.

Well composed Job Descriptions will help managers monitor and navigate employees’ performance to ensure that they are on track in meeting personal and company goals.

Learn the art of writing and developing effective Job Descriptions to ensure that jobs created, meet with the business and corporate objectives.  This hands-on workshop is an experiential programme designed to help HR practitioners understand the requirements of a good and effective Job Description.
