Two memorable
experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my
Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing
address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple
question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon
earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to
conscientiously think ahead always.
The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR
leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide
us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”,
which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be
strategic partners to the business.
If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant
and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the
near future”.

Labour
Chief Mr Lim Swee Say Opens Singapore HR Congress 2007; Local Trademark
Event Draws Top Leaders to Jointly Address People Issues
Key issues to be
addressed include managing leadership and business continuity as well as
managing competencies and capabilities of the new workforce.
1.
Guest-of-Honour,
Mr Lim Swee Say, Secretary-General of National Trades Union Congress,
and Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, addressed more than 600 CEOs,
directors, people leaders and managers from Singapore and the Asia
Pacific region at the Singapore HR Congress & Business-Connect
Exposition 2007, organised by Singapore Human Resources Institute
(SHRI).
2.
Themed Building Human Capital Capabilities for Businesses Today and
Tomorrow, the event highlights the need to increase capabilities of HR
and its standards in Singapore to manage the new workforce:
multi-cultural and multi-generational. In the next 5 years, Singapore
workforce is likely to see a widening of mindset gap if issues such as
ageing workforce are not addressed head-on.
3.
Business people and HR leaders must gear up to know what makes their
employees tick before losing them to other sectors or countries.
“Expectations of HR practitioners will continue to increase in scope and
complexity. Therefore, HR practitioners must acquire a spectrum of
competencies and standards,” said Madam Ho Geok Choo, President of SHRI.
With the higher employee mobility, Madam Ho also implicated that the
need to attract the right talents would be one challenging task for HR
Practitioners.
4.
Today marks the first day of the three-day event, which also includes a
showcase of the latest in HR services, products, solutions and
technologies in Singapore.
5.
The highly interactive event draws the attendance of some renowned
speakers and panel members from global and local companies, ministries,
universities and consulting firms to share their industry best practices
and experiences. Some of the internationally renowned keynote speakers
include Adrian Gostick and Dr Margaret Schweer.
6.
“We are delighted to be the partner sponsor of the Singapore HR
Congress. One of the key HR challenges today is a shift in attitudes of
employees and job seekers. At this Congress, we hope to help
corporations enhance their internal process to be more effective in
their HR management and talent sourcing,” said Dhiren Shantilal, Vice
President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Kelly Services.
7.
This Congress is thus timely as it provides a platform for Business and
HR people to meet annually to discuss current trends and challenges,
benchmark against industry standards, in all to build a stronger HR
community.
Launch of the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices
8. The highlight of Day 2

Business-Connect Exposition 2006 that reached out to the highest number
of attendance in the history of World HR Congresses, SHRI is
organising the
annual HR event – Singapore HR Congress & Business-Connect Exposition –
