Two memorable experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to conscientiously think ahead always.

The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”, which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be strategic partners to the business.

If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the near future”.

MANAGING A DIVERSIFIED WORKFORCE –

IS DIVERSIFY LEADERSHIP THE WAY TO GO?

Survey reveals that leadership is becoming even scarcer resources than before, and that more needs to be done to help Singaporean leaders to improve leadership and embrace diversity.

1. In the era of a diverse workforce, employers are primarily concerned with obtaining high levels of performance, through creating workplace synergy among the employees. Creating a conducive working environment is becoming more challenging for many employers here as they deal with generational diversity issues and the changing employment landscape. Coupled with the increasing number of global talents joining the Singaporean workforce, the issue of managing diversity has taken centrestage.

2. Why is managing diversity an important aspect of leadership? In a recent study conducted by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI), leadership development is a vital element in a globalised work environment. And according to a study co-conducted with the Boston Consulting Group and SHRI earlier this year, leadership improvement is an urgent challenge for Singaporean companies.

3. In today’s workforce, companies need capable leaders to examine the impact of diversity and culture on individuals and organisations. Diversity can be a source of competitive advantage and leaders who leverage on diversity will be able achieve successful business outcomes.

4. The study highlighted that only 38 per cent of the 272 respondents acknowledged that Singaporean leaders are embracing diversity. Seventy-seven per cent respondents said that Singaporean leaders are not capable of motivating and enabling staff to achieve both individual and corporate goals and 81 per cent highlighted leadership qualities as important criteria to consider during promotion.

5. As Singapore plugged itself into the global grid and fitting into the globalised economy, this aspect of embracing diversity and leadership improvement are crucial. Singaporean leaders must be able to adapt to the changing employment landscape and new workforce demography. Managing diversity effectively within the company will help to ensure better business performance and avoid high turnover rate.

6. Findings of the SHRI Leadership study titled Managing Diversity & Bridging Communication Gap will be released on 25 September 2008 at the SHRI HRD Conference. The findings will help companies, employers and HR practitioners to better manage the mutli-cultural dynamics in a workplace and employ effective ways to diversify leadership. Another interesting part of the survey that will be highlighted is The Neuroscience of Leadership.

7. Please note that the full report will only be ready by 10 October 2008.
