ES - Problem Solving & Decision
Making (PSDM), Supervisory
Date
New dates to be advised for 2012
 Introduction
The Problem Solving and Decision Making series of modules are designed to
facilitate individuals to learn beyond just techniques in solving workplace
problems. Besides covering the identification of root causes to a problem,
generating & evaluating alternative solutions, it also incorporates essential
competencies involved in making appropriate decision and taking responsibility
for the decisions made.
PSDM at Supervisory level aims to hone the skills of the individual who has to
lead the team in effective detection, anticipation and identification of
potential problems. Supervisors are often in the best position to harness
synergy and facilitate the team’s efforts to resolve problems through generation
of ideas and solutions. They will learn to be skilled in making decisions and
seeing them through to implementation.
Objective
By the end of this module, participants will be equipped to:
* Recognise early symptoms to a problem, scope and analyse the problem, identify
causes and consider further impacts to the problem
* Demonstrate the ability to think out-of-the-box, synthesise ideas and lead
group discussions in generating solutions to the problem
* Develop an implementation plan and ensure an effective execution of it
* Take responsibility for a problem and justify a decision while remaining open
to feedback, new ideas and suggestions
* Anticipate effects of implemented solution on the company and plan for
contingencies, taking into account other uncontrollable factors – e.g.
developing a modification plan

2. Generate and evaluate alternative solutions to a problem.
3 Make a decision and take responsibility for it
