Two memorable
experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my
Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing
address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple
question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon
earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to
conscientiously think ahead always.
The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR
leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide
us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”,
which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be
strategic partners to the business.
If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant
and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the
near future”.

ES - Problem Solving & Decision
Making (PSDM), Operations
Date
03 to 04 November 2011

Introduction
The Problem Solving and Decision Making series of modules are designed to
facilitate individuals to learn beyond just techniques in solving workplace
problems. Besides covering the identification of root causes to a problem,
generating & evaluating alternative solutions, it also incorporates essential
competencies involved in making appropriate decision and taking responsibility
for the decisions made.
The operations level aims to equip operations staff with necessary skills to
anticipate and identify problems at least within their circle of influence and
to be proactive in generating and evaluating alternative solutions to resolve
problems. In many situations, operations staff may not be in the position to
make supervisory or managerial decisions needed to solve a workplace problem.
They are encouraged to recommend possible solutions and more importantly, to
take ownership if their recommendations are supported and implemented.
Objective
By the end of this module, participants will be equipped to:
* Differentiate planned change and deviation from norm or Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs)
* Identify impact of the problem on one's immediate area of responsibilities and
parties involved
* Generate practical ideas relevant to the root cause(s) of the problem
* Consider the strengths and limitations/constraints of each selected idea
* Develop an action plan to implement the selected solution

1. Anticipate and identify problems
2. Generate and evaluate alternative solutions to a problem.
3 Make a decision and take responsibility for it
