About the Programmes:
Ex-professional teachers
(MOE-trained), in partnership with SHRI, are offering one-day classes in the
school holiday period of May/ June 2012. These classes aim to encourage students
to improve their written and spoken English, as well as to help develop their
thinking and listening skills.
Class Fees:
(a) $64.20 (inclusive of 7% GST) per class.
(b) Sign up for 3 classes and above and receive a 10% discount on
total class fees.
OR
Sign up with your friends:
(c) 2 registrations and above: 5% discount on total class fees
(d) 5 registrations and above: 10% discount on total class fees
*Cannot be used in conjunction with discount in (b). For example, if 2 friends
sign up for 3 classes and above, you can only choose between the discounts in
(b) or (c).

information. Do note that we only accept the funding of 2 students per class on
a first-come first served basis.
Seats will be reserved only upon receipt of registration form. A confirmation
note will be sent to you within 2 days (excluding weekends). As seats are
limited, a no-show fee of S$50 will be imposed on individuals who registered but
fail to turn
up for the classes for an invalid reason. 25 students are needed to start a
class. Parents will be informed a week in advance if class is cancelled. Cheque
payment to be made to ‘SHRI’ and mailed to us before the class commences OR you
may bring along your cheque/cash payment on the day itself. There will be a
surcharge for payment made by credit cards (UOB & DINERS). We do not accept
NETS.

honors degree in English from the University of London. She
taught in a leading girl’s school in the east since the
completion of teacher training. She has been awarded a long
service medal. She continues to teach English to foreign
students.

Trainer Profile: |
He has an honours degree from London University, a TTC
certificate with distinction, a certificate in Non-Formal
Education and a Certificate in Urban Education. This is his 50th
year teaching. He is also the author of 35 books which have sold
close to half a million copies. He enjoys helping young people
achieve their best.

Mr. Joe Conceicao |

Trainer Profile: |
He describes himself as Singaporean of Malacca-Portuguese
descent and identifies himself as a “Katong boy”. He was
educated in St Patrick’s School, before the war, and became a
teacher in St Patrick’ when the war ended. He pursued his higher
education at Raffles College, University of Malaya in Singapore
and Manchester University, UK. He has authored several books.
His first, “Flavours of Change” describes his childhood, early
life, and experience during the Japanese Occupation.
In his later book
“Singapore and the Many-Headed Monster”, he passionately talks
about his involvement in and observation of ethno-religious
disturbances in Singapore. From teaching in St Patrick’s School,
he went on to teach in the University of Singapore, and became
Director of Extra-mural Studies. Joe Conceicao says he was happy
to serve his country as a Member of Parliament (for Katong).
From 1977 he became
Singapore’s Ambassador to Moscow (twice) and to Indonesia, and
Singapore High Commissioner in Australia. After retiring from
the Foreign Service in 1994, he eventually took to writing. Joe
Conceicao is now nearing 87 years old.

Trainer Profile: |
After finishing school in Saint Joseph’s Institution, entered
the University of Malaya. He was a bright student and a good
sportsman. He graduated with a good honors degree in history and
a diploma in education and participated in the 1956 Olympics in
Melbourne as a Singapore hockey player. He is also a talented,
self-taught musician who not only plays any musical instrument
with a keyboard, but also composes music and lyrics.
Beginning as a school
teacher, he rose to be a lecturer at the Teachers’ Training
College (now the National Institute of education), and then a
secondary school principal and a junior college principal. He
was a deputy director of the NIE and then a director in charge
of curriculum development (now known as Director of Curriculum
Development) in the Ministry of Education.
All in all he spent
about 35 years in the Education Service, and throughout most of
his time he was also active in the Singapore Teachers’ Union.
For most of these 35 years, I was his fellow colleague and for
some years I was also the Director of Education (now known as
Director General of Education) in the Ministry of Education.
