Two memorable experiences stood out for me – one with my CEO and the other was with my Chief HR Officer. The experience with my CEO occurred during his closing address at one of my company’s leadership development programs. His simple question was “What’s next?” This simple question if reflected and acted upon earnestly, will prevent us from being complacent and drive us to conscientiously think ahead always.

The second experience was a conversation with our CHRO during this year’s HR leadership meeting. When asked what words of wisdom she could offer to guide us into 2011, she said “Always stay close and relevant to the business”, which we all knew was meant to inspire us to continue to add value and be strategic partners to the business.

If I may add, I would say, “Stay close to doing what you love, stay relevant and ahead by developing future capabilities needed to be successful in the near future”.

About SHRI | Powering Human Capital | Products & Services at a Glance

SHRI has entered a new phase of its existence when it celebrated its 40 anniversary last year, and this existence has been elevated to a higher plane of relevance and significance in the HR and business arenas, having successfully delivered and concluded the groundbreaking 11th World HR Congress & Business-Connect Exposition in May 2006. Being a member of APFHRM and appointed as the Secretary General/Treasurer of the WFPMA (2006-2008) are additional feathers in our cap. SHRI can said to have indeed, fulfilled much in bringing HR to the fore!

Moving forward, it’s timely that we become more single-minded in embracing HR’s new mandate – that of value creation.

Human capital means human value. By its name, human capital must transform into value for its stakeholders. HR, as the function and infrastructure facilitating that transformation is definitely poised for powerful strategic advantage. It is thus crucial for SHRI, as the only professional HR body in Singapore, to effectively and vigilantly support HR to embrace its new mandate by breaking new grounds to help it create, deliver and sustain value.

Powering Human Capital provides the guiding principle for our new focus and direction. It embodies the principles and culture of SHRI, its commitment to the human capital industry to help organisations and individuals develop and grow people in the new economy. Hence, as we continue to further bring HR to the fore, Powering Human Capital, most aptly describes our new strive now.
